Different ways you can shoot with us

We provide a chance for non-members to try their hand at clay target shooting at our grounds in Upper Hutt which is about 30 minutes drive from the centre of Wellington.

There are four different ways you can shoot at the Hutt Valley Clay Target Club.

You can shoot with us:

  • Through our Novice Coaching program,
  • Book an event through our Corporate Event team,
  • A visitor from another club or as an overseas shooter
  • By becoming a registered member of our club.

Novice Coaching

Generally, on the fourth Saturday of each month, the Club holds Novice Coaching sessions.

These sessions enable members of the public and new club members to try clay target shooting under the direct supervision of senior members of our Club.

It is not necessary for you to have a firearms license for this novice coaching, as at all times you’ll be under the supervision of a licensed shooter.

However, if you decide to become a member you will need to first obtain a firearms license.

We will teach you firearms safely and basic firearms handling skills.

Each session should last about 60 minutes and provides for the shooting of 25 targets for a modest fee.

Shooters are required to note that this sport is an outdoor activity so suitable clothing is required along with sturdy footwear (no jandals, thongs or open sandals). The club will provide shotguns, appropriate ammunition, and a coach.

These days can experience high demand so to ensure we have sufficient coaches on hand and to minimise any delays we run a roster system.

To book your Novice Coaching session, email our team (coaching@huttvalleyclaytargetclub.org.nz) the week before your desired session.

Additionally, by providing details of any previous shooting experience you may have and your age group, we can better match you to the most suitable coach.

Visitors

At times the club holds events that visitors from other New Zealand clubs or overseas come to attend. If you are a member of another club, you are welcome to shoot with us at a competition event or club day.

If you are coming from overseas you will need a permit to get your firearms into the country.

You can apply for this permit online: https://forms.police.govt.nz/firearms/visitors-application

When filling in this application you will need to provide details of where you are going to store the gun securely, who you will store it with, and a New Zealand firearm license number.

You are welcome to store your firearm in the gun safe at the Clubrooms during our shoot events, however, do get in touch with someone from our committee who can provide you details of a hosting NZ Firearms license.

Prohibited Shooters

If you have previously held a firearms licence and it has been revoked or you would not reasonably expect to get a firearms licence upon application, this is not for you and we are sorry, but the Firearms Safety Authority would not allow us to let you shoot on our registered shooting grounds.
